UPND likely to continue beyond August – ZCTU

THE Zambia Congress of Trade Unions (ZCTU) sees the UPND Government likely to continue governing beyond the August 13 general elections.
ZCTU Secretary General Joy Beene, attributed this to the party’s consistent engagement with citizens and willingness to listen to workers’ concerns.
Speaking yesterday, during the Labour Day celebrations in Mansa, Beene commended government for notable strides such as reducing inflation to single digits, implementing pension reforms, expanding dialogue with the labour movement, and undertaking massive recruitment in key sectors such as health, education and defence.
“We, however, urge the authorities to ensure these gains translate into meaningful improvements in workers’ livelihoods because the rising cost of living, driven partly by global fuel price shocks continues to weigh heavily on citizens,” he said.
Dr Beene also raised concern over the delayed confirmations and promotions in the public service, casualization of labour, and limited skills development.
He, therefore, called for fair recruitment practices, job security and investments that promote decent work.
Dr Beene also called for sustained engagement among government, employers and unions.
“We would like to also caution civil servants against political involvement ahead of the elections,” he said.
He further emphasised that the labour movement will remain firm in defending workers’ rights in all sectors across the country.
